Task Assigned Notification

My coworker and I noticed yesterday that we are not receiving an in-app notification whenever a task is assigned to us. She and I created a new task and assigned it to the other person, but neither of us have a notification for that. We are receiving notifications for mentions and when certain changes are made to existing cards.
It looks like this is supposed to be a default setting. We've looked at the notification section under preferences.
Is there something I'm overlooking or is this a technical issue?
